In Germany, back in late 1930s, a physiotherapist Katharine Schroth managed to learn to treat her own scoliosis by mastering the control of her back muscles to correct the deformity. After her initial success she began treating others with scoliosis. Later she and her daughter, Christa Lehnert-Schroth, formed an institute that continued to help thousands of people with scoliosis. As one of the major treatments of scoliosis in Eastern Europe, it is now introduced in the United States to help more and more people.
The Schroth Method of scoliosis exercises are a series of highly specific, corrective movement exercises that are taught to an individual which they perform at home on a daily basis. The method aims to stop the progression of the scoliosis deformity, reduce or eliminate scoliosis pain sensations, improve the posture stability, improve the lung expansion and breathing capacity, reverse the abnormal curves, improve the appearance of the trunk and most importantly avoid the need for a major surgery.
By definition, Schroth Method Scoliosis Exercise Program is an individualized program that depending on the specific configuration of the patient’s scoliosis. Like snow flakes, no two scoliosis patterns are the same so exercises need to be tailored to the individual by a specially trained physician or therapist. If the deformity is more severe than the others, a more comprehensive plan is required.
The main focus of the treatment is for the client to lengthen and strengthen the specific weakened and shortened muscles of the spine to help restore balance and symmetry to the spine. Directional breathing exercises are employed to help de-rotate the spine. This is a vital component of the treatment because it enables the thorax, or rib cage, to expand equally on both sides which not only relive pain by stopping the spiraling progression of the scoliosis but also improves breathing capacity and can actually help correct some of the deformity.
The major benefit of Schroth Method of scoliosis exercises is to reduce the rotation of the spine which can reduce the side to side deformity of the spine and in many cases eliminates the pain. This method of specific scoliosis exercise is beneficial for both children and adults. Although many children with scoliosis don’t have symptoms of pain, they can still benefit from Schroth by reducing their deformity to avoid surgery. With adults, the Schroth method helps eliminate scoliosis pain and greatly improves the quality of life for the patient by allowing them to perform their normal activities of daily living without pain or with much less pain.
